The MATHCOUNTS Competition Series has 4 levels of competition—school, chapter, state and national. Each level of competition is comprised of 4 rounds—Sprint, Target, Team and Countdown Round. Altogether the rounds are designed to take about 3 hours to complete.
Their mission is to provide engaging math programs to US middle school students of all ability levels to build confidence and improve attitudes about math and problem solving.
Students can only register for MATHCOUNTS through their school.

Sprint Round
The Sprint Round features 30 questions to be solved in 40 minutes, without a calculator.
Below is an example of a chapter-level Sprint question, taken from the official MATHCOUNTS website.
By switching two of the digits of the number 123,456, Rodrigo obtains a new number that is 1980 more than the original. What is the product of the two digits Rodrigo switched? (answer: 15)
Target Round
The Target Round focuses on mathematical reasoning. features 4 sets of 2 problems each with 6 minutes to complete each pair. Note that calculators are allowed on the Target Round.
Team Round
The Team Round focuses on collaboration across teammates. Students have 20 minutes to complete 10 problems, with calculator use allowed and teammate collaboration encouraged.
Note that only the 4 students on the school's team (not individual students) can take this round.
Countdown Round
The Countdown Round is a live round where students have at most 45 seconds to solve a question against their competitor. There are up to 80 questions provided for Countdown, and elimination continues until there remains one Countdown Champion.
Note that this round is optional at the school, chapter, and state levels.
