From Math Contests to Medical Research: Lynn Dai’s Journey Through Random Math & Beyond
In eighth grade, Lynn Dai joined Random Math with a passion for puzzles but little to no sense of how deeply it would influence her future. What began as an interest in problem-solving grew into a journey through math competitions, coaching, and eventually, cutting-edge research in pharmacology. Now a Yale student studying biophysics and biochemistry, Lynn applies mathematical thinking to complex challenges in genomics and global health. She attributes much of her growth not just to talent or effort, but to the mindset she developed at Random Math.
That mindset: curious, analytical, and collaborative, isn’t reserved for elite math students. It’s something any student can develop.
1. How Math Builds More Than Problem Solvers

At first glance, Random Math may seem like just a training ground for math competitions, and in many ways, it is. But for students like Lynn Dai, it became something more; it became a place where they learned how to think critically, collaborate with teammates under pressure, and build self-resilience. But most importantly, it became a place where their real transformation began.
“Working through tough problems with teammates not only strengthened my math foundations but also taught me how to stay calm and strategic under competition pressure,” Lynn reflects.
During team rounds at Random Math, students work together to tackle advanced, time-sensitive problems which push their problem-solving and teamwork abilities. Success, during team rounds, depends not only on accuracy, but also on trust, collaboration, and emotional composure within the teammates. When Lynn faced a mental block, she learned not to panic, but to pause, reframe, and return to the problem with a new perspective, and often with a teammate’s support. Some of her best moments in problem-solving—figuring out tough problems she had no idea how to begin, for example—was achieved under high-stress environments while working with her teammates. That mental flexibility now serves her well in high-pressure research environments, where success depends just as much on cross-disciplinary collaboration and clear communication as it does on technical precision. Whether she’s working through a genomic model or co-authoring research, she draws on the strategies and patience she built in team rounds.

In the summer of 2022, Lynn returned to Random Math, not as a student, but as a coach. She taught classes from Levels A through C and guided younger students through the same problems she once struggled with.
At first, her instinct was to give back to the program that shaped her thinking. But soon, Lynn realized that teaching was unlocking something new for her. “I began applying knowledge from my classes at Random Math to produce instructional content intended to help parents and students navigate their competitive math journey,” she shared. In trying to clarify concepts for others, she realized that she was clarifying them for herself too.
There was also a personal reward: witnessing the moment a student’s eyes lit up after they understood a new concept. “It stopped being about getting the right answer fast,” Lynn reflects. “It became about asking the right questions, and helping others find joy in the discovery process.”
These experiences weren’t just academic for Lynn; they also mirrored what she would later encounter in medical research and patient communication. Coaching taught her to pause, reframe, and listen. It gave her tools to be not just a better teacher, but a better thinker and communicator.

Lynn’s path took her from math contests to Yale, where she now applies mathematical reasoning to complex questions in genomics and global health. For example, in one research project, she built bioinformatics models to explore how gene patterns correlate with disease risks across populations. “In the future, I hope to construct tools in the medicinal field that acknowledge how different cultures and societies contribute to science and healthcare,” she says.
The hours she spent breaking down tough problems taught her how to approach uncertainty with logic, creativity, and calm. She spent hours in the lab, filling a worn notebook with equations and flowcharts, cross-referencing them with datasets pulled from clinical trials in search of patterns that might explain how genes influence disease risk. What made her work stand out wasn’t just technical rigor; it was her perspective.
This blend of logic and human-centered thinking is now guiding her toward a future in medicine. Lynn hopes to design tools that reflect cultural and global diversity in healthcare by combining hard data with compassion and strategy with inclusivity.
